Maggie joined Savills Investment Management for a 4 month placement in September. Maggie's blog is below, so do have a read to find out more about her experience.

Having started with Savills in May 2013, I have now had the opportunity to work across a number of different, and very much varied, departments.  I am a Graduate Surveyor on the Commercial APC pathway.  I graduated from the University of Ulster, Northern Ireland in 2011 with an Undergraduate degree in Property Investment & Development.  During my time at University I worked with a local firm of chartered surveyors where I gained an invaluable mix of commercial and residential experience.   A short while after graduating I decided to take the leap and move to London, where I worked at IPD (Investment Property Databank) for a year and a half.  As an Investment & Performance Analyst at IPD I was responsible for processing and analysing property and fund performance for a number of investment management houses.  Wanting to prioritise achieving my APC I joined Savills in May 2013.

My first rotation was in the Hotel Valuations Team based at Savills Margaret Street office.  This was an excellent first rotation, where I gained a great depth of experience across the hotel and serviced apartment industry both on a national and international level.  I felt the level of experience gained and responsibility within this role was very important to me at this stage in my career and I even opted to stay an additional four months in this department.  Following on from this I have done a rotation in High Street Retail Investment & Business Space Property Management, where I gained an insight into the investment world, with a strong emphasis on the retail sector as well as learning the fundamentals surrounding the day to day management of property, something which I feel every Surveyor should experience and understand.

My current rotation is within Savills Investment Management. Although I have only been in this department six weeks I have already began to recognise how this role builds upon the experience I have built up within Savills to date.

Within Savills Investment Management there are three main business arms; Pooled Funds, Separate Accounts & Investment Mandates.  To date I have been working on Pooled Funds and Investment Mandates.  Unlike other Investment Managers Savills gives a much broader range of experience, providing exposure to fund management and asset management.  The benefit of this is that I can identify strategic asset management opportunities to improve the property or income profile, implement the strategy and see the benefit of that strategy on the fund's performance.  My day to day role involves working on asset strategies, speaking with other specialists including surveyors, architects and legal teams, instructing works, creating Investor presentations, writing Investor reports and sourcing new property opportunities.  This rotation is especially beneficial, as it not only builds upon all the experience I have gained to date but gives a vast insight into a number of different property sectors and geographies, which you would otherwise not experience within one rotation.

The most important thing for me throughout my career is that I always want my work to challenge me and this rotation certainly does that.  I find I learn so much more through a challenging piece of work than work that lacks complexity.

Within Savills Investment Management I have developed professional relationships with colleagues, peers and Clients and attended some remarkable social events that I would otherwise not have the opportunity to experience.  I recently had an enjoyable evening at the Charity Times Awards black tie event at the Lancaster Hotel.

Within Savills the support and guidance has been second to none.  From the recording of the APC diary to structured training days, additional CPD and guest speakers, the Graduate Recruitment Team cannot do enough to help Savills Graduates.  As well as always being there for any queries we may have, the Graduate Recruitment Team listen to our ideas; taking them on board in a continual attempt to improve the scheme.

To me the best thing about Savills is the culture.  The company as a whole is much more relaxed and personable than I ever imagined it was going to be.  Whilst we work hard as graduates we also play hard.  From day one the level of responsibility given is significant and the graduate scheme truly has the respect and support of the entire company.  From my point of view I get to see so much more than I would within any other ordinary job.  The flexibility of Savills Graduate Scheme with six four monthly rotations mean the Graduate has the opportunity to work across a range of sectors. The double rotation option provides the opportunity to spend extended time within a department you enjoy and continue to excel in.  My advice to anyone thinking of applying to the Savills Graduate Scheme is to go for it and be yourself!!
