Summer Scheme Stories

Summer Scheme is an opportunity for you to work at Savills for a 4-week period undertaking graduate level work. During a placement, there could be the opportunity to go on site visits, attend client meetings and conduct research. We also hold attend departmental talks to learn about other areas of the business and meet directors from across Savills for lunch.

Find out what it is like to join us for a Summer placement by reading the profiles of our previous Summer Scheme Students.

    Name: Ella Dormon

University & Course: University of the West of England, BSc Real Estate (Valuation & Management)

Pathway: Surveying (Commercial, Development and Residential)

    Team: International Investment, London

    Personal Profile:

In April 2013 I participated in the Insight week at Savills. At this point I had had no previous involvement with the company and wasn't sure what to expect. I spent the week in the Recoveries and Receivership team in London which I thoroughly enjoyed. I attended several meetings during the week which I found fascinating and by the end of the week felt far more educated than I thought possible after 5 days in the business.

I started the Savills Summer Scheme in June 2013, placed in the International Investment team in London. My placement taught me how to complete many fundamental aspects involved in the success of the team (including, writing introductions and details for new properties on, or coming to the market, performing cash-flows and conducting research on tenants of properties to hopefully ensure our clients of the tenants covenant strength, to name a few).  All the employees I met went out of their way to help me learn and develop my property knowledge.

All in all, my experience of Savills has been one that I cannot closely compare to that of other companies that I have worked at. I personally believe that in terms of all round experience, they are in a league of their own. For this reason I will do my very best to try and join the Savills Graduate Scheme and recommend that if in doubt, try Savills, you won't regret it!

    Name: James Bircumshaw

University & Course: Oxford Brookes University, BSc Real Estate Management

Pathway: Surveying (Commercial, Development and Residential)

Team: Residential Valuation, Commercial Valuation & Residential Investment, London

    Personal Profile:

My journey at Savills began in the Easter of 2012 where I was fortunate enough to secure a place on the newly launched Insight Scheme which saw me gain a weeks work experience in the Residential Valuations team based in London. Following a successful week of inspections, contributing towards report writing and due diligence, I was excited to apply for the Summer Scheme 2012.

I gained a place on Summer Scheme 2012 and 2013. The Summer Scheme helped me develop and expand my knowledge and commercial awareness and allowed me to 'put textbook into practice'. The departmental overviews ensured I gained a glimpse into the diverse range of departments and teams Savills offer.

The Summer Scheme has allowed me to form some tight knit friendships, in addition to providing many networking opportunities throughout the business and wider industry. Having completed the Insight Scheme and Summer Schemes; I am thrilled to have secured a place on the Graduate Scheme and can't wait to join the London 2014 Graduate intake!

    Name: Riah Patel

University & Course: University of Westminster, BSc Real Estate

Pathway: Surveying (Commercial, Development and Residential)

    Team: Student Investment, London

    Personal Profile:

I participated on the Summer Scheme at Savills during July 2013 and worked with the Student Investment team which is part of Residential Capital Markets. I worked on a range of different tasks including contributing to the Student Comparables Database, attending departmental overview talks, assisting at the Savills' Student Spotlight Launch along with carrying out research on university and privately owned student accommodation and Houses in Multiple Occupation (HMO's) in cities in the UK.

My experience at Savills was thoroughly enjoyable. I learnt a lot during the Savills Summer Scheme such as finding out how Savills is structured as an organisation which makes efficient use of their resources and expertise to meet the needs and expectations of their clients; finding out how projects are identified, scoped and managed though to successful completion; and how to manage and get the best out of team members.

I have a strong passion for property and it is an industry that I have always wanted to join. Once I have graduated in I would like to do my APC and specialise in the Commercial Sector. My interests lie in the legal aspects of property and valuation and I am looking forward to pursuing these interests during the rest of my career. I am a fluent Spanish speaker and hope to utilise this skill by finding the opportunity to travel and work around the world. I am very much looking forward to applying for the Savills Graduate Scheme and I am enthusiastic about doing my APC at Savills.
